Sui Park

Sui Park is a professor in the Department of Craft Design at Sookmyung Women’s University in South Korea. Her practice specializes in Korean lacquer (ottchil) and woodturning.

How is it made?

Among Sui’s most representative works are the Bloom Bowls, which embody both aesthetic refinement and functional purpose. Constructed from successive layers of hemp paper coated with ottchil (traditional Korean lacquer) and reinforced with a layer of clay likewise treated, the bowls achieve a rare combination of lightness and durability. The application of ottchil is a meticulous practice, each layer requiring several days to cure before the next can be applied. Once the structural form is shaped, additional layers of lacquer are carefully built up, culminating in the application of gold leaf that imparts a subtle radiance. Requiring more than fifty distinct stages, the creation of a single Bloom Bowl reflects both the technical rigor and the enduring patience of the master craftsman.
